The NAB Show 2018 Wrap-Up: The Digital Revolution Rules.

It wasn’t so long ago that the radio industry was collectively shuffling its feet as in-car listening—AM/FM’s bread and butter—was subsiding amid a threatening new technology called “streaming,” as at-home and at-home tune-in were also declining. Well, look at us now. While traditional over the air AM/FM remains the mothership, broadcasters at the 2018 NAB Show this month made clear that the industry has now created its own digital revolution.

During the National Association of Broadcasters convention last week in Las Vegas—which brought together 94,000 attendees from 161 countries and 1,800+ exhibitors—station streaming has become a given. Add proprietary websites and social media, and the likes of mobile apps, smart speaker skills, podcasting, ROI and geo-fencing.

The Digital Experts Share Smart Device Strategies at the NAB Show

It’s no secret that a wild, wondrous array of smart devices, voice-activated speakers and mobile apps are unlocking newfound potential to connect with radio audiences, while potentially plumping stations’ bottom lines. The challenge now for broadcasters is trying to keep up with these rapidly evolving platforms, even when that sometimes means starting from scratch—again.

At the Wednesday NAB Show session, “Maximizing Smart Devices and Mobile Apps for Radio,” executives from Beasley Media Group and Hubbard Radio shared their efforts to stay ahead of the curve.

Steve Meyers, Executive VP of Digital for Beasley, explained that his company has made the leap to a new mobile app platform for each of the company’s 63 stations in 15 markets, with a focus on next-generation features—which he admits continue to evolve. The media company began the design phase six years ago, working with jācappps.

Stanley Cup Playoff Hockey To Air On Westwood One.

The quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup gets underway tonight with Westwood One providing live play-by-play coverage beginning with the drop of the puck as the Vegas Golden Knights host the Los Angeles Kings in Game One of their Western Conference series and culminating with the crowning of the 2018 Stanley Cup Champion.

In conjunction with NBC Sports and NBC Sports Radio, Westwood One will broadcast several playoff games throughout the next few weeks, including Game 3 between the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks on Monday, April 16 and Game 4 between the Nashville Predators and the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, April 18. Other playoff games in the first two rounds will be announced at a later date. Coverage will continue with the audio broadcast of every game of both Conference Finals as well as the Stanley Cup Final.

IHeart And Youngstown State Athletics Extend Agreement.

iHeartMedia and Youngstown State University Athletics have extended their agreement keeping YSU football and men’s and women’s basketball on “NewsRadio 570” WKBN and “The Sports Animal” WNIO (1390) Youngstown, OH through the 2020-21 season.

“YSU is a cornerstone of our community and we are very proud to continue our partnership with them,” iHeartMedia market president Robert Hotchkiss said. “We’ve expanded our coverage of YSU Athletics over the years and recently decided to feature additional coaches and student-athletes on the weekly programs.”

iHeartMedia Youngstown has broadcast YSU football and basketball games since 2002 with football and men’s basketball games airing on WKBN and women’s basketball games carried on both stations. Changes as SABC Radio shuffles presenters

South Africa’s public broadcaster, the SABC, has announced several exciting changes to presenter line-ups on its radio stations, underscoring the need to stay relevant and stay tuned to listeners’ needs.

But the process isn’t without a great big elephant in the room: The Sakina Kamwendo situation. Kamwendo abruptly disappeared off air midway through her Forum at 8 show on Friday morning, replaced by music for the remainder of her allotted time. Rumours pointed to the show’s producers being told to take her off the air. Social media went crazy, with fans demanding answers.

Top 2017 Radio Advertisers available by Nielsen Based On Total Spend.

Comcast Xfinity, Mattress Firm, Home Depot and GEICO rank among the top 10 national advertisers at both music radio stations and spoken word outlets for 2017, based on total spend in PPM markets. That’s according to Nielsen’s just released Audio Today Report, based on its top 48 radio metros that are measured by Portable People Meters.

Nielsen separately broke down the top advertisers for music-based and news/talk stations. For the former, McDonald’s was No. 1, spending $46.1 million in PPM markets. It was followed by Mattress Firm ($41.4 million), Comcast Xfinity ($36.8 million), Home Depot ($34.0 million) and T-Mobile ($32.8 million), rounding out the top 5.

For spoken word radio, Zip-Recruiter was the top spender in the 48 PPM markets for 2017, dedicating $11.1 million over the airwaves. The top 5 there is fleshed out by Comcast Xfinity ($8.6 million), GEICO ($7.7 million), Mattress Firm ($6.8 million) and Accufacts Research ($6.8 million).</p

Research Offers Tools And Tips To Corral At-Work Listening.

Attracting at-work listeners has long been indispensable to the success of AC, classic hits and other music formats. A webinar from NuVoodoo Media Services, “How to Win the Workplace War With PPM Panels & Diary Keepers,” offered broadcasters a tool chest of new information about best practices to reel them in and keep them listening.

The media marketing, programming and content intelligence provider surveyed 3,041 persons ages 14-54 online in January 2018, focused in Nielsen PPM markets.

Calling its sample group “ratings likelies,” meaning those deemed inclined to participate in PPM or diary surveys, NuVoodoo asked participants if they listened to either the radio or a streaming service while at work. In total, 39.1% said yes—with a robust 56.4% of “PPM likelies” responding yes and 59.0% of “diary likelies” saying yes. The percentages were highest for those 18-34, followed by 25-54, 35-54 and 14-24.

Well Hubbard Rebrands KNUC As ‘98.9 The Bull.’

Hubbard Radio has rebranded country KNUC Seattle as “98.9 The Bull” from “Country 98.9.” It’s the latest change at the new station, which Hubbard flipped from rock in December, after Entercom dropped country on KMPS in favor of soft AC as “The New 94.1 The Sound.”

“Welcome to the next evolution of 98.9, a personality all its own,” PD Lisa Adams said. “More Bull, more music, more fun.”

Adams was named PD of the station in January after serving as marketing director for AC sister “Warm 106.9” KRWM. Her programming experience includes the OM/PD post at Townsquare Media hot AC “Mix 106” KCIX, AC “107.9 Lite FM” KXLT and “WOW Country 104.3” KAWO in Boise, ID.

Hot News:- Katz Radio Group Promotes Christine Travaglini To President.

Katz Media Group has promoted Christal Radio president Christine Travaglini to president of Katz Radio Group, tasked with overseeing the radio rep firm’s nationwide sales operations. She reports to Mark Gray, who had been running the radio rep firm until March 2017, when he was promoted to CEO of Katz Media Group.

A longtime Katz veteran, Travaglini has been president of Katz division Christal Radio since 2008. She will now drive overall business development and strategy of Katz Radio Group’s 14 regional offices that serve as the national sales rep firm for more than 3,300 radio stations and their digital audio platforms. In a news release, Katz said Travaglini “will lead the Katz team in driving maximum results for broadcasters and their advertisers through radio advocacy, innovative marketing solutions and compelling data and insights.”

The Congress Shows Support For $2 Million Pirate Radio Fines.

Bipartisan support for a proposal to raise the maximum fine for pirate radio to as much as $2 million emerged in the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology on Thursday. During a discussion into the proposed Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement or “PIRATE” Act, which is being circulated among members, lawmakers agreed the current fines have come up short in the effort to go after pirate radio operators. “It’s high time we pay more attention to the harm being done to consumers and broadcasters alike,” Subcommittee chair Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said.

Federal law presently allows the Federal Communications Commission to impose a maximum fine of $19,246 per day for each violation or each day up to a statutory maximum of $144,344. The proposal would boost that to as much $100,000 per day, per violation with a maximum fine allowed by law of $2 million.
