Negotiations between the radical National Student Representative Council (NSRC) and the university authorities culminated in a dead-end and decided to close its doors temporarily.
The closure is applicable to all Unisa’s campuses across South Africa, as the government is unwavering that it cannot accommodate larger numbers of students.
The University of South Africa (Unisa) can take 380,000 students and can accept about 54,000 new students annually, but cannot meet the radical group’s claim to accommodate all applicants.
Unisa is considering accepting an additional 10,000 students, but will first have to evaluate its implications.
Experts point out that the possibility is growing that the universities of the country, one after the other, will have to close their doors permanently if the impractical claims continue.
